Defeated, Yet A Winner

I love entering contests. I always have and more than likely always will.

With the age of social networking, it is much easier to enter contests, particularly through the current most popular social networking application, Twitter. With a 140 characters or less tweet (message), a public relations representative, publicist or agent for a celebrity can ask a simple question for their followers to reply with the answers. Within a matter of minutes, followers know if they’ve won the current contest promotion.

I will admit, I have participated in a few of these contests, particularly ones pertaining to Kasey Kahne. I will also admit that on at least two occasions I have I been one of the lucky ones to win the particular contest. The most recent one was just the other day, Tuesday to be exact. And You Call That Racing?

Posted by Penni On July - 30 - 2008

I apologize in advance for the shortness of this week’s column, but I have never been more embarrassed to be a race fan than I was Sunday. The race was a mockery to the sport.

A competition yellow every 10 or so laps, really, are you kidding me?

During the four practice sessions (two Friday and two Saturday) teams had noted the tires were wearing down too quickly — 10 laps in as opposed to the usual 30 laps in at Indianapolis. NASCAR wanted to prevent problems and in effort for safety said Sunday morning that they’d throw a competition caution 10 laps in to check tire wear. NASCAR also said they’d throw another competition caution several laps later to be on the safe-side. It was also noted that Goodyear had shipped tires for the Pocono race just in case they were needed. Read the rest of this entry »

Short Track Racing — Short Of Amazing

Posted by Penni On March - 19 - 2008

Short track racing typically equals disappointment. Disappointment for the drivers, not the fans, and Bristol was no exception.

Once again, like several times this season, the expected winner or dominant driver didn’t cross the finish line first.

For the second time this season with only five races under the belt, Cup qualifying was cancelled due to rain (or weather). Once again, the starting order was set by the owner points.

Nationwide qualifying was also cancelled (for the third time), because the drivers had not practiced on the track. (The rain had cancelled Nationwide practices earlier.)

Saturday called for both series to have one long final practice each with Clint Bowyer’s No. 2 BB&T Chevrolet being the fastest Nationwide car. Kasey Kahne’s No. 9 Budweiser Dodge was the fastest Cup car. Both names would continue to play a part in Saturday’s Nationwide race. Read the rest of this entry »

Woo-Hoo! NASCAR Is Back!

Posted by Penni On February - 6 - 2008

NASCAR’s New Year’s Eve is here — with the Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway!

It seems like the hiatus (that began nearly three months ago) went by fast and slow all at once. Of course, there were the three different testing sessions (Daytona, Las Vegas, and California) to help the time go by and feed our racing “addiction,” but in all honesty it really wasn’t enough. We really didn’t get to see any racing except for the few programs on ESPN2 and Speed that showed clips and highlights of the sessions. Real racing — as short as it may be Saturday night — is still more then enough to hold us over until the Gatorade Duels and the highly anticipated Daytona 500 next week. Don’t you agree?

There are several things to look forward to — good and bad. Read the rest of this entry »
